20km
As everyone staggered in from the 32 km walk yesterday there were several sighs of relief from people when they heard English spoken. Many of us had been with all French people for a couple of days and were fatigued from thinking so much in a foreign language. My NZ friends were there as well as a new Dutch lady, an Australian woman and a Swiss guy. The seven of us enjoyed a delicious dinner at the local restaurant.
I had a salad with greens, tomato, walnuts and chicken kidneys followed by duck confit and pommes frites and a crepe au chocolate for dessert. A big meal but we had walked for 7 hours and were really hungry.
Tonight we are staying in a rather bare bones gite communal with a kitchen available but no meal options as part of the stay. Which is fine as we found a market just outside of town where we bought lots of fresh produce to make a huge salad nicoise as well as yogurt and coffee and eggs for breakfast and picnic supplies for lunch.
The walk today went quickly especially compared to yesterday. Once again there were no cafes or services available along the route like there were every few km in Spain. One needs to be prepared with water, food and the willingness to go to the bathroom behind a tree. We walked on lovely paths through the forest today.
The Australian woman Angela has been walking since April but really for the past 4 years. She was part of a group of 30 people who did a Peace Walk in 2014 from Vienna to Trieste in Italy, walking through 6 countries in honor of the 100th anniversary of WW 1. She has walked many of the Camino routes and also the Way of St. Francis from Florence to Rome. I'm loving hearing her stories.
